- water, preferably distilled, about 1 liter
- phenolphthalein solution, about 5 ml
- sodium carbonate (aka washing soda), 1 scant teaspoon
- disposable pipette or eye-dropper
- 24-32 small test tubes
- test tube rack
- beaker, flask, or cup
- permanent marker
- 24-32 index cards
